Medical insurance for students
Your choice of medical aid scheme - be it private or statutory, is valid for the duration of your studies
Latest updates ongoing the health system can be found under INFO, Health reform as from 1. Jan. 2004".
Being a student at a state-approved German university makes statutory medical insurance compulsory. Students who are insured in the private sector can cancel their membership and subscribe with a statutory medical aid scheme on the day of enrolment.
Following possibilities exists for medical insurance:
1. Family insurance
Children up to the age of 25 years can benefit by being insured via the parents. This decreases their monthly membership fee.
Please note that you cannot change your choice of medical aid scheme once you start your studies for the whole duration of your studies. This means that if you start studying whilst being ensured via your parents(private or statutory), you must stay with the same medical aid option(private or statutory) after your 25 birthday, for the duration of your studies.
After your 25 birthday you are responsible for your own medical insurance. All medical aid companies offer special student rates. Please make sure to compare the benefit programs respectively in order to choose the right scheme to suit your needs. Another point you should think of is to compare the membership fees applicable after you finish your studies. Private medical insurance often offers more benefits in comparison to statutory medical insurance, yet the membership fees increases dramatically.
2. End of compulsory medical insurance period
After the 14 semester, or at the latest in the semester before you turn 31, you are not obliged to be a member of a medical aid scheme any more. As from this stage student rates no longer apply and should you wish to stay medically insured you must pay standard rates which can differ extremely from student rates (mainly in the private medical aid sector).
In special cases the duration of the compulsory medical insurance period can be prolonged, depending on: the nature of your course, the duration of your studies or personal difficulties. In such cases you must present your situation to your insurance company, and they will decide whether of not student rates will apply in your case.
Should you wish to prolong your period of compulsory medical aid membership you must apply this before the end of the 14 semester/semester in which you turn 31. To voluntary continue your membership the most medical aid funds provide you with a transition period of six months in which special rates still are applicable. Thereafter the membership fees are calculated by the different medical aid companies respectively.
We suggest you make an appointment with your medical aid contact person and discuss which option is best for you.
3.Private medical insurance
To be able to insure yourself privately you first must first free yourself from the compulsory insurance rule. This is a final choice you make, and cannot be changed for the duration of your studies.
Private medical aid funds offer special rates for students, which are applicable until the age of 34, which is quite affordable in comparison to statutory medical aid rates that apply after the compulsory period. Yet the fees can be be adjusted after short notice.
Always look out for the following in the private medical aid sector:
- for each family member a different rate applies,
- all medical costs must be payed in advance, the costs are then reimbursed by the medical aid company,
- Insurance companies may cancel the membership should you be a high-risk patient,
- benefit programs differ from company to company, and additional fees may apply for high-risk patients.
At the end of your studies/before you turn 35, special student rates no longer apply. Because membership fees, benefits and other conditions vary from company to company we strongly advise you to compare your options carefully before making a decision
Here the rule is: Only when the former student starts working he or she has the possibility to change from the private to the statutory medical insurance schemes, or visa verse!
